Fins are important because they are the device that gives you stability, control and direction on your surfboard. They help you maintain your speed and "cut" through the water in a way that would be impossible on a board without fins.
 
This drawing is based on an original 'Californian Classic' fin 10" from True Ames. I bought this when I built my own longboard from balsa wood at Ollywood Surfboards.
