The Montbéliarde is a breed of red and white dairy cattle from the area of Montbéliard, in the Doubs/Jura department, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France. It is mainly used for dairy farming and especially for cheese making.
In the summer of 2024 I was able to visit two dairy farms in this area. Passionate farmers, who love these animals and their profession. What immediately struck me is how the animals and the dairy product are cared for with great care and love. It is very clean everywhere. To me, the French culture in this area is very different from what I have seen in other parts of the country. I felt comfortable and at home here. The rich nature and space here is ideal for the cow to have a beautiful life.
